NRA Rifle Course Bivouac
Syracuse Cadet Squadron hosted an NRA Rifle Course Bivouac in May that led to all 28 cadets and six senior members passing the basic rifle shooting course.
In addition, 16 of the cadets and four senior members went on to earn the Winchester/NRA Pro-Marksmanship certification.
The two-and-a-half-day bivouac took place at Verona Beach State Park, with classroom instruction and shooting at Oneida Rifle Club.
Calling it “a huge success,” Squadron Commander First Lt. Matt Mallory said he received a congratulatory email from head NRA instructor Dave Klish, who praised the CAP cadets.
“I commend you on a fantastic group of young men and women,” Klish wrote. “To mold them into what you have is a testament to you, your adult help and assistants and to the youth alike. I have not seen such a well-disciplined and focused group in over 25 years. You should be extremely proud of your and their accomplishment.”
The Rifle Course Bivouac included over eight hours of shooting, with the group expending over 6,900 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition and shooting 250 paper targets.
Those earning the Pro-Markmanship certification had to “shoot five bullets into ten bull’s-eyes, scoring a minimum of 20 points in each bull’s-eye, all from 50 feet away,” Mallory said. “The 16 cadets are authorized to wear the Pro-Marksmanship medal on their blues uniform.”
He added: “I cannot express enough how proud I am of all of our cadets and senior members that participated.”

A Winter Bivouac in Spring!
FABIUS – During the last weekend of March, members of the Syracuse and Fulton Squadrons participated in a winter bivouac held at Highland Forest County Park. The purpose of the training was to promote emergency services training and culminated with 2 practice sorties resulting in multiple levels of Ground Team qualifications. Ground Team Leader, Ground Team Member 2 & 3, and Mission Radio Operator were among the achievements successfully met this weekend.
Training throughout the weekend focused on the basics of emergency services. For some members, this was a refresher of knowledge already learned, but for the majority of the members in attendance this was their first time handling a handheld Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB). Blocks of instruction were also given to reinforce proper radio communications on corporate assets, map reading, compass navigation, improvised field first aid, and litter carries. The capstone event called on the Ground Team trainees to utilize all the skills they had learned in the weekend to process clues to find a simulated downed pilot roaming the woods nearby. Through teamwork, the “pilot” was rescued and each member walked away from the simulated emergency with a better understanding of what a real Ground Team mission entails.
Attendees were able to keep a great attitude, have fun, and learn how to be of better service to their community, despite a cold weekend with temperatures hovering at 10 degrees.

Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle Visit
Syracuse, NY- The Syracuse Cadet Squadron was paid a special visit by Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-25) Wednesday evening. Buerkle, an Auburn native, spoke to the cadets and senior members of the squadron about multiple topics ranging from government spending to local issues. On the topic of spending Buerkle had the following thoughts:
“The United States’ debt is currently over $14 trillion. The President’s budget not only increases spending, but also raises taxes for families and small businesses – the very people who are desperate for relief. This budget from the President spends too much, taxes too much and borrows too much. This budget failed to address the fiscal and economic threats that currently face our nation.”
Buerkle also took time to answer questions from the cadets of the squadron. Cadet Airman Briana Winslow inquired as to how cadets can best pursue a service academy referral. Buerkle explained the process to the cadets, stating that it involved committees and that each service academy received an allotted amount of referrals per state. Afterwards, Buerkle meet with multiple cadets and spoke to them candidly.
Before departing, 1st Lt Matthew Mallory, squadron commander, presented Buerkle with a squadron challenge coin, in appreciation for her efforts towards building a better community.
