New meeting time as of 5 Jan 2011
Beginning January 5, 2011 we will need to expand our weekly meeting time slightly. The current arrival time of 6:50pm (1850 hours) will be changed to 6:30pm (1830 hours). Opening formation will be changed from 7:00pm (1900 hours) to 6:45pm (1845 hours). All promotions and awards will be done during opening formation. The closing formation time of 9:00–9:05pm (1900–1905 hours) will remain the same.

Cadets Beat Over 600 Teams To Advance to Round 3 of Cybersecurity Challenge
Syracuse Cadet Squadron is one of 32 Civil Air Patrol (CAP) teams from around the country – and one of only two CAP teams in the Northeast — to advance to the third round in the All-Service Division of CyberPatriot, the nation’s largest and fastest-growing youth cybersecurity challenge.
The Syracuse cadets “beat over 600 teams,” scoring high enough to compete again on Dec. 4, noted Squadron Commander 1st Lt. Matthew Mallory of Syracuse. The Syracuse team includes Cadet Capt. Nathan Porceng of Baldwinsville, Cadet Capt. Steven Cusumano of Clay and Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Joseph Maier of Memphis, NY.
The CAP teams join 49 Junior ROTC teams from all military service branches in CyberPatriot, which is an educational initiative produced by the Air Force Association to inspire students to consider science, technology, engineering and math fields in their studies.
The first two rounds of competition ended Nov. 6, in which teams raced against time and their opponents to quickly find and effectively correct vulnerabilities in a virtual computer network.
“We are ecstatic about the success of this round,” CyberPatriot Commissioner Bernie Skoch said. “CyberPatriot is truly changing the way today’s youth view cybersecurity and hopefully inspiring them to become the cyber defenders our nation desperately needs.”
If the local cadets successfully complete round 3, they will travel to Orlando, FL for round 4 in Februrary. Finalists compete in the final round in April just outside Washington, D.C.
Syracuse CAP Night at the Crunch

CAP Cadets present to CNY PC Users Group
1st Lt Matthew J. Mallory along with Cadet Capt Nathan Porceng and Cadet SSgt Tylor Mallory provided a flight simulation presentation to the Central New York PC Users Group. During the one hour presentation they went over how the yoke and rudder pedals maneuver the planes control surfaces as well as the function of the most important gauges in the plane. The cadets demonstrated many planes to include a Cessna, helicopter, jumbo jet and a UAV. 1st Lt Mallory and C/Capt Porceng spoke of the differences between flying the computer simulation software vs a real plane. Both agreed that the sensitivity of a real plane is more delayed and that there is no motion sickness with a computer simulator. The meeting was attended by 39 people in total.

Ropes Course Bivouac
On the weekend of 17-19 September 2010 over 60 members of the civil air patrol from all over new york state and one from New Hampshire ascended on Adams Eden Camp in LaFayette, NY to participate in a 2 day long bivouac that included 1 full day of high and low ropes course activities to help strengthen team building and confidence. Another full day was allocated to search and rescue training and ended with a 3 hour long training mission that included 3 separate teams working together to find an ELT and downed pilot.
One team was the mission base where they processed radio communications from the other 2 teams and plotted their locations on a map. Another team was the ground team and they were tasked with doing a search line to locate the downed pilot. The final team was the urban direction finding team who’s job was to cover a large area of land in a vehicle and to use the DF unit to locate an ELT that was going off. Each team spent about 1 hour in each position learning the ins and outs of how a real mission plays out.
Even though the weekend was packed the group found time for PT, church service, a hike to the 1,500′ overlook and a long hike down the stream passing by 3 waterfalls. A safe and fun time was had by all and plans are in the works to make this an annual event.

The Syracuse Cadet Squadron designed, built and helped to staff an elaborate Civil Air Patrol booth at the great New York State Fair. Visitors could try their hand at flying an ultralight, Cessna, helicopter, jet, UAV Predator, R/C planes and or getting into a dog fight in a WWII plane.
The booth also showcased the NY Wing EMCU (Emergency Mobil Communications Unit) truck with tow behind generator, 2 large model rockets from the CNY Model Rocketry Challenge, a full size R/C plane that was positioned to hang over the R/C simulator, a video of this years NY Wing encampment and many pictures, magazines and brochures.
The booth was staffed for all 12 days of the fair by over 200 CAP cadets and senior members from 14 units within the state. The staff was in recruiting mode, talking to thousands of youth and adults about the Civil Air Patrol program and why they love it so much. Next year is sure to be a success as well.

From the new Squadron Commander
Syracuse Cadet Squadron Members:
When commanders transition into new positions they often bring with them new goals, ideas, different ways of completing things and sometimes even new staff. This in no way is to undermine the past command staff or all of the great things they completed during their time in command. For that we are forever thankful! Without them we would not have a squadron to charge forward with.
I have created an action plan to move us in a direction I feel you will all enjoy and benefit from. We will strive to attain hefty goals over the next few years. All changes made will be to strengthen our squadron internally as well as in the community. Goals such as increasing our squadron membership by 50% in 2010 will not be easily attained but will be well worth the reward once accomplished.
The word that I have associated with our next year together is “IMAGE”. Our charge will be to improve our internal image both individually and as a squadron as well as how our image is seen in the local, regional and national community.
I am a firm believer in teamwork and do not believe that one man or woman has all of the answers. That said, I am always open to input, ideas and suggestions so please feel free to pass your thoughts up your chain of command to me. The only dumb question is the one not asked. As such, the only wasted thought is the one not acted upon.
I am very blessed to be awarded the opportunity to be the commander of the Syracuse Cadet Squadron and I look forward to soaring to new heights with all of you.
Sincerely,
Matthew J. Mallory, 1st Lt, CAP
Commander NER-NY-135
Syracuse Cadet Squadron
